Stearns Trail Town

Kentucky’s Southern Gateway to Adventure

In 2015, Stearns became one of Kentucky’s earlier designated Trail Towns. The designation recognized what visitors had known for years—that Stearns is the gateway to some of the state’s best outdoor recreation.

Located between the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest, Stearns serves as the hub for hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, camping, and exploring the rich history of McCreary County.

The Historic Stearns area serves as the official Trail Town trailhead and welcomes visitors from across the country. From here, you can ride the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, visit the McCreary County Museum, explore Historic Stearns, or set out on an outdoor adventure.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing scenic train ride or an unforgettable day
on the trails, Stearns is the perfect place to begin your journey.
