The 2.25-mile Alum Trail leads users from a ridge top on the Daniel Boone National Forest National down to its connection with the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail at the edge of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Rhododendron, mountain laurel and hemlock are abundant along the trail. The trail is moderately difficult with significant elevation change and a series of carved stone steps near the start of the descent. There are also several stream crossings with stepping stones.
Most hikers start from the gate on National Forest System Road 6003 and follow the gravel road that aligns with the trail, staying to the right of the powerlines, until they begin their descent along the cliffline. Hikers may also use the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail to access the trail from Alum Ford Boat Ramp or Yamacraw Bridge on Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
From US 27 in Whitley City, take KY 700 (Alum Road) west towards Alum Ford for approximately 3 miles. Continue on KY 700 for approximately 3 miles and turn left onto National Forest System Road 6003.
Parking is available on either side of National Forest System Road 6003. Please do not block the road or gate.
